Is coconut oil bad for you?
Are you caught up in the controversial coconut oil uproar? Up until last week coconut oil was food from the Gods, but since the American Heart Association put out an article challenging it’s Godliness, people are in a frenzy.
This is nothing new though, every week there seems to be ‘a new research study’ which contradicts the preceding one.
Is Coconut Oil Healthy? What you need to know.
Many people will be alarmed by this coconut oil news from the American Heart Association, however if we look closely, we see that it’s guidelines aren’t telling people to consume zero saturated fat. The AHA is recommending the average man limits daily saturated fat intake to 30 grams per day; 20 grams for women. That’s approximately the equivalent of 2 tablespoons of coconut oil for men and 1.33 tablespoons for women.
The Cholesterol Controversy
Is coconut oil unhealthy? The AHA advises against the use of coconut oil because it increases LDL, or “bad,” cholesterol, however it fails to mention that coconut oil can also raise HDL, or “good” cholesterol levels, too. (1, 2)
Beyond this omission, what IS included in their report is the suggestion that we choose oils such as corn or soy over coconut oil. This is absolutely absurd. Corn and soy happen to be the most GMO and pesticide heavy crops out there. Could their recommendation be due to the fact that they work in conjunction with the gouverment who has an interest in increasing the sale of their corn and soy oil sales that have taken a hit since people began learning about health and nutrition?
Corn and soy oils are much higher in Omega 6 than Omega 3, which we know causes inflammation and acidity in the body.
In order to improve overall health, the focus must shift from high cholesterol as the biggest risk factor for heart disease and instead focus on reducing inflammation and oxidation through lifestyle and diet.
Who do we trust for nutrition information?
Not everybody has a background in nutrition or dietetics, and even those who do seem to be struck with overwhelm, confusion and plenty of misinformation. It is easy to get lost in all the nutrition noise, especially when politics, ethics, morality and emotions come into play.
We must remember that just like our own unique bioindividuality, the right diet is one that is also personalized to ourselves at a certain time, in a certain environment. Food is functional, symbolic, medicinal, therapeutic or abusive. We both subconsciously and intentionally use food to affect how we feel, think, act, interact and even to interpret our understanding of the world.
There is no objectivity in food. There is no good food or bad food. There is no right diet or wrong diet. There is no one way to eat.
We must each learn to listen to our bodies’ individual needs in each moment and react accordingly.
